City of Prime Ministers - Allahabad

Ancient Hindu scriptures like Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Vedas refer to this place as Prayag. The word Prayag means confluence and Allahabad is the cusp of the rivers Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh this is the seventh most populated city of the state and second oldest city in India. Allahabad is said to be the heart of Hinduism, therefore it is also famous as “Tirth Raj”. As it is situated on the banks of the great rivers of India, Lord Brahma, God of creation chose Prayag to perform Pakrista Yagna at the beginning of creation.

The Mughal king Akbar named it as Illahabad in 1575, later pronounced as Allahabad.It is also famous as “City of Prime Ministers”. Famous Indian freedom fighters such as Rajiv Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Chandra Shekhar Azad were born in this city.

Many recognized and well known colleges and research institutions are located here and it is very famous as “Oxford of the East”. Famous personalities like Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan and Subhadra Kumari were born here.

Events / Festivals

“Kumbh Mela” in the month of January is one of the most awaited events in Allahabad. Millions of people gather to celebrate this event. In 2001, about 1 million people from around the world participated in the Maha Kumbh Mela at Allahabad, with a total participation of approximately 60 million. This events is the largest congregation of humans anywhere in the world and a sight that defies imagination.

Other famous festivals that are keenly celebrated are Ardh Kumbh Mela and Magh Mela where devotees from different cities and states take a solemn dip in the holy rivers.
