Ancient Hindu scriptures like Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Vedas refer to this place as Prayag. The word Prayag means confluence and Allahabad is the cusp of the rivers Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh this is the seventh most populated city of the state and second oldest city in India. Allahabad is said to be the heart of Hinduism, therefore it is also famous as “Tirth Raj”. “Kumbh Mela” in the month of January is one of the most awaited events in Allahabad. Millions of people gather to celebrate this event. In 2001, about 1 million people from around the world participated in the Maha Kumbh Mela at Allahabad, with a total participation of approximately 60 million.
