Palani is situated in the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is about 112 km from Madurai and almost 152 km from Tiruchirappalli. Palani is a sacred place and is famous as one of the sacred six “padai veedu” temples of Lord Murugan. A large number of devotees believe that Lord Murugan came here and settled down in this blessed place. That is how Palani achieved its status.

The sacred town derives its name from the amalgamation of two Tamil words ‘pazham’ which means fruit and nee. It may also be spelt as “Pazhani” in English. In “Thirumurukatruppadai,” Palani has been involved as the 3rd “Padai Veedu”. This hill was the southern end of the Kongu Nadu and refers to this place as “Vaiyapuri Nadu” that was ruled by king “Vaiyapuri Kopperumbaegan”.

Sivagiri hillock, Vaiyapuri tank and Sirunayakkan tank are famous as the major landmarks of the town apart from many other renowned temples. The land of Palani is prosperous and fertile with black soil that is considered as good for cultivation. It is a major centre of a form of traditional Indian medicine which is known as Siddha Vaidyam that is said to have been developed by the ascetics’ residents in primitive times in the hills.
