Madurai Airport is a customs airport and was established in the year 1957. A new integrated terminal building was inaugurated on 12 September 2010. The airport was notified as customs airport on 31 December 2011 and became functional as a customs airport from 1st January 2012. On 25th August 2012, two chartered flights from Malaysia landed at the airport, thereby making them the first international aircraft that landed in Madurai. Spice Jet was the first airline that started the first commercial international flight to Colombo on 20 September 2012. Spicejet started its second international flight from Madurai to Dubai on 22 November 2013.
The airport is maintained by Madurai airport authority that looks after its security and maintenance. It receives flights of various airlines such as Jet Airways, JetKonnect, Spice Jet and Air India that connects Madurai with different South Indian cities such as Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The main airlines that are operating at the airport are Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and Mihin Lanka.
The integrated terminal building is used for both International and Domestic flights. AAI (Airports Authority of India) is planning to convert the old terminal into a cargo complex.
Terminal 1 - Domestic: Regular domestic flights run from this terminal to Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Some of the airlines that operate here are Air India, Spice Jet and Jet Airways.
Terminal 2-International: It is a newly inaugurated terminal that is integrated with Terminal 1. It operates International Flights to Colombo only, but in future it has plans to add up more international flights.
The airport has 6 escalators, 8 lifts and aerobridges for convenience of transit passengers.

The airport is located at a distance of about 15 kms from the city center and is well connected to other parts of the city via National Highway 47.
Connectivity by Bus: The nearest bus stand to the airport is Periyar Bus Stand that is located at a distance of 10.2 kms. Regular bus service is available from the airport that is run by the state government.
Connectivity by Train: The airport is located at a distance of about 12 kms from the Madurai Junction railway station. One can hire a cab or use public transport to reach the airport from the railway station and vice versa.
