This is one of the busiest international airports in India which operates as a civil enclave on an Indian Navy airfield. The airport began with only one daily flight in 1999. Thereafter, on 16 June 2007, the then Union Minister of Visakhapatnam T. Subbarami Reddy announced the airport was fully prepared for international flights. Vizag is apparently the short name for Visakhapatnam, and has been named after the local goddess Visakhi.
The airport was recently struck and damaged by Cyclone Hudhud on 12 October 2014. This lead to the inundation of runways and destruction of navigational aids. The airport has been shut down since 11th October 2014, but had started partial operations on 17th October 2014. It is expected to be fully operational within a few months from now.
Approximately, 7 lakh passengers fly in and fly out of the Vizag airport every year.Vizag airport is currently handling 12 domestic services to north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, neighbouring districts of Orissa and some parts of Chhattisgarh.
Vizag airport has been ranked 13 among Indian airports as per AAI. The airport has limited function timing because it is still under construction and therefore, currently functions only between 8 am and 8 pm only.
Flights are carried from to some of the major domestic cities in India like Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune. These flights are carried by airlines like Kingfisher Airlines, Jet Airways and Air India.
International flights to Singapore are also carried from Visakhapatnam International Airport. These are carried out by airlines like SilkAir, Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines.
After the destruction of the runways there has not been any recent updates on this terminal. It used to function as a cargo terminal with the sole purpose of export and import services from Colombo and Dubai to India and vice versa. The two leading airlines, ExpoAir Cargo and NakiAir used to provide transportation of goods from India to Colombo and Dubai.
If you are ready for some high-voltage drama amid thrilling days and sleepless nights, then the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is your ultimate destination. Being one of the few eco-centres of Andhra Pradesh, it has the Indian leopard as its star attraction. This dry evergreen forest has been designed keeping the natural habitats of wildlife intact providing them a haven with a near-natural look.
