Krishnapuram Palace is one of the most captivating attractions of the region. It was built by the Travancore king, Marthanda Varma, in the 18th century. It is a two-storied building crafted in the traditional Kerala architectural style. The gabled roofs, dormer windows and narrow corridors give it an amazing facade. The palace is mainly known for its wall paintings as well as its beautiful architecture. One of the biggest wall paintings in all of Kerala is placed in Alleppey. It is known as the Gajendra Moksham, which literally means "The redemption of the elephant". This palace is a superb piece of architecture and has been transformed to a museum that houses many historic sculptures, canvas and bronze antiques. Presently, it has been taken over by the archaeological department of India for proper maintenance and care.
