Things to do in Bangalore
Bangalore is officially known as Bengaluru and is the capital city of state Karnataka. It is India’s third most populous city after Mumbai and Delhi. Due to its crucial role as the country’s leading IT (information technology) exporter, it is also called as the “Silicon Valley of India”. Software majors, Wipro and Infosys, are headquartered in the city, which has considerably contributed to the city’s riches. As it is located at a height of over 3000 feet above sea level, Bangalore enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. It is a major cultural and economic hub and the second fastest growing city of India after Surat. Popularly called as the ‘Garden City of India’, it was ranked 3rd among the world’s top 10 cities to visit by Lonely Planet in May 2012. It’s a hot and happening city which shouldn’t be missed out by any traveller. Here goes the list of things to do in Bangalore before you plan your trip.
1. Wildlife Safari at Bannerghatta Biological Park
If you’re tired of seeing caged animals of zoo, then here is your chance to see them enjoying their freedom in their natural habitats. The forest trip (Safari) take visitors in a completely “iron grilled” bus inside the park. Each window seat has a 10 cm diameter circular gap through which you can put a camera lens out to click a picture. At first stop, you’ll come across herbivore animals like bison and deer, eating their food or just playing around. Next stop will take you to the abode of Bear, then to the Tiger’s home (where one can also see white Tigers) and finally the grand safari will end at Lion’s territory. Just go for it!
2. Birdwatching in Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
A must visit place for birdwatchers, this sanctuary is located just 2 kms from the town Srirangapatinam. The area is a breeding ground for birds like Asian Openbill Stork, Black-headed Ibis, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Woolly-necked Stork and Indian Shag. It is home to a large number of migratory birds of different species who come as far as Siberia, Australia and North America. That’s why it is counted amongst the largest bird sanctuaries of India. At certain seasons, during winter months (starting from mid-December) around 40,000 birds can be seen together here. If bird photography interests you then it is the place you wouldn’t want to miss out.
3. Entertainment in Innovative Film City
Ramanagara is a small village situated approximately 50 km southwest of Bangalore. Its huge rocky terrains are quite famous as the location of the blockbuster Bollywood movie ‘Sholay’. It is a perfect place for avid rock climbers. One of the most popular hillock among climbers is the ‘Ramadevara Betta’. The top of this hill has a small lake which has temples on either side. One is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati and the other is dedicated to Lord Rama. Once you climb the hill and reach there, you’ll surely enjoy the view from the top. The best time to visit is during the cooler months of the year i.e. September to February. Monsoon months should be avoided (strictly) as the rocks are slippery and the place is full of leeches and all kind of insects.
5.Shopping Destinations: Orion Mall & Commercial Street
The restaurant’s quirky name ‘Jolly Nabobs’ comes from the title given to the employees of the British East India Company. The place serves a fusion of North Indian and English cuisine. Food is cooked according to the dum phukt tradition i.e. in containers over a slow fire. It specialises in hybrid cuisine like ‘The Anglo Lucknowi’ which is a mix of English and Awadhi cuisines. You must taste some really mouth-watering non-vegetarian dishes like Kakori Kebab, Dum Pukht Mutton Biryani, Begum’s pudding and Jhinga Masala Fry. It is located at ITC Windsor, 25 Sankey Road and is open from 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
7. Wine Tasting Tour at Grover Vineyards
If you love to bak bak (chatter) then it is the ideal place for you. The bar has become one of the favourite nightlife destinations amongst tourists and locals alike. Food and drinks can be enjoyed under the open sky as there is an outdoor seating available at the bar. It serves all types of alcohol ranging from beer to vodka and scotch to martini. Located at 1, Kira Layout, Koramangala, it is open all days from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Enjoy your drink with lots of bak bak!
9. Enjoy a musical evening at Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain
One of the biggest lakes of the city, it is located in the north eastern fringe of the city. Spread over an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometres, Ulsoor lake is a popular relaxation spot among locals and tourists. The area is surrounded by green trees and many small islands. There is a boat club that offers boating to take visitors around the lake with stopovers at some of the beautiful islands. One can sit and relax on the islands while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Rowing and pedal boats are also available for visitors that can be hired on per hour basis. Several eateries and coffee shops are also located nearby for refreshment.
