History of the city dates back to the 11th century. Chalukya dynasty founded this city during this period and called it as a Vijayapura. City was called as Vijapur or Bijapur in the 14th century during the dynasty of Bahamani sultanate of Gulbarga. In the 15th century, the Adil shah dynasty has taken the rule. He made many monuments during this period. After 1947, this district has become the part of Bombay state then reassigned to Mysore State. Finally in 1956 it comes under Karnataka.
