Bijapur in Karnataka is such a well- preserved land of Islamic architecture, where the Gol Gumbaz proudly calls it the father of all.

Gol Gumbaz ranks among the most imposing edifices in India. Its gigantic dome, massively spread out floor area, tall tiered octagonal towers and the central dome that stands without the support of pillars are distinct features that contribute to its popularity. The mausoleum was built by Muhammad Adil Shah between CE 1626 and 56 on miles of open landscape. The complex houses several different sites like:

  • burial chambers of Mohammed Adil Shah, his two wives, his mistress Ramba, daughter and grandson,
  • a mosque,
  • a gateway,
  • a dharamshala and
  • Naqqar Khana.
Interestingly, the central dome of Gol Gambaz is the second largest dome in the world after that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. While you can feel the echo of any sound in this place, you can also enjoy the pleasing sight of scenic green landscape from its terrace. Narrow passages, thick walls, massive halls and mild dark interiors convey to you the courageous tales of Muhammad Adil Shah. The building in front of the edifice has been turned into a museum to enrich you with the rich past of Adil Shah dynasty.
