Housing the oldest museum and art gallery in the country, the city has been a proud home to the first British establishment in India, Fort St. George. It was initially developed as a trading post and later served as the origin of the modern Indian Army. Fort St. George is of great historical importance and a sure architectural marvel that has stood the tests of time.

Fort St. George is of great historical importance and a sure architectural marvel that has stood the tests of time.

Fort St. George is primarily sectioned into St. Mary's Church and the Fort Museum. The former is one of the oldest surviving churches built by the British and display beautiful tombstones in its graveyard. A 150ft tall teakwood-made flagstaff is another major attraction of this church, which is unfortunately in ruins at present. The Fort Museum is a grand, three-storey showroom displaying antiquities spanning from swords, daggers, rifles, pistols, cannon shots, mortars, helmets, uniforms of Army officers, medals, medallions, official porcelain tableware, portraits, oil paintings, silverware from St. Mary's Church, original letters from British officials to their counterparts, clock stamps, coins, lampshades, clocks and a host of other imperial enchantments.
