Visit Madikeri Fort

Amid those thick forests, scenic gushing waterfalls and miles of verdant coffee plantations, history holds a deep rooted relationship with Coorg in Karnataka. And it is Madikeri, a hill station and headquarters of Coorg district that synchronizes well with its long gone historical royalty. Madikeri Fort stands as a silent spectator of events of victory and defeat from the time of Muddu Raja during 17th century. It is one of those preserved remnants of the bygone era that has not only stood the test of time, but also underwent architectural changes with passing time.

Originally made of mud, Tipu Sultan incorporated his architectural skills as he has rebuilt the fort in granite and named the site 'Jaffarabad'. It again faced architectural modifications during the rule of Lingarajendra Wodeyar II and British Empire. Its historical richness gets exemplified when some of its elevated structures open up to astounding views of the surrounding landscape. One unique feature about Madikeri Fort is the Gothic style Anglican Church built by British rulers in 1855. While a cluster of secret pathways of the fort adds to its mystery, its architectural design and palace like structure vastly brings out the masterminds of ancient India.

Some quick facts about Madikeri fort includes:

  • entry is free,
  • camera is allowed to be carried inside free of cost,
  • duration of visit may extend up to 2 hours approximately, and
  • open on all days between 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, except Monday.
An exquisite display of historical weapons and artifacts in the fort in turn explains its motto to link India's past with present extensively.
