India is a spiritually inclined nation with hundreds and thousands of known and unknown consecrated sites within its premises, built to honour the religious sentiments of its citizens. Orissa houses a good number of temples, out of which the Katak Chandi Temple is highly revered and Maa Katak Chandi is believed to be a 'Living Goddess'.

The history of the temple and its first priest, late Sri Hansa Panda, is associated with a legendary story that speaks of how the priest had visions of the Goddess herself and truly believed in her divine powers. To this day, the temple is served by his family. The deity is worshipped as Bhuvaneshwari Mahavidya and is seen with four hands holding a Paasha (noose), Ankusha (Goad), Abhaya (gestures dispelling fear) and Varada (granting boon).
