The Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, was established in 1906. It is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in India. In 1991, it was affirmed a deemed university by the University Grants Commission. The main building, styled in Greeko Roman Architecture by C.G. Blomfield, is of national heritage, inaugurated in 1929. This imperial educational institution may be an unconventional sightseeing attraction, but once there, one will get swayed away by its abundant greenery, strong old walls and all pervading tranquillity.
The estate is spread over 450 hectares having the Himalayas at its backdrop. The scenic location adds to the beauty of the institute and attracts large flocks of tourists from everywhere. The campus has a museum on forestry, which is divided into sections like Pathology Museum, Social Forestry Museum, Silviculture Museum, Timber Museum, Non-Wood Forest Products Museum and Entomology Museum. The Botanical Museum here is also an attraction.
