East Garo Hills was created as a district in the year 1976, after the Garo Hills district of the state was re-organized with a vision to get the administration close to the people.

The district headquarters is located at Williamnagar and covers an area of 2603 sq km. Named after Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the founder Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Williamnagar is situated on the widespread plain lands along the bank of the Simsang River, at Simsanggre.
