The deity of Amareswara, other name of Lord Shiva is worshipped here by devotees who come from different parts of India. The walls of the temple with numerous inscriptions narrating the past of the region promise to leave you astonished with their glory and richness.

The temple thrives on the banks of sacred Krishna River, which in turn open up to commanding views of the surrounding. The 15 feet high white marbled lingam of Lord Shiva is the first and foremost attraction here. Otherwise, its towering gopuras created in typical Dravidian style architecture will also enrich you with the era's architectural affluence. There are numerous beliefs adorning the temple like

  • If a devotees dies at the temple premises, he will be straightaway absorbed into Lord Shiva
  • If a devotee stays here for more than three days and worships Lord Shiva after a dip in the river, he will then attain Sivaloka.
  • Finally, it is said that the temple was built to bring in peace after a massacre of 1000 violent tribesman plotting against the king of the region.
Whatever said and done, Amareswara Temple is few of those religious landmarks in India that throws light into several things like ancient Indian style of art and architecture, religious beliefs being carried by Hindus since time immemorial and history of Vijaywada and its adjoining regions. A train to Vijayawada Junction or flight to Karipur International Airport will let you witness this spectacular piece of human creation.
