Gwalior's has a long tradition of being a capital city, from the time of its establisment in the 8 century AD until the independence of India, when the Scindias had their royal seat here. Many fine examples from history are preserved here, making this city a unique and timeless example of a glorious past . Gwalior's history can be traced back to a legend. In the 8th century, a local chief called Suraj Sen was critically ill, he was cured by a hermit called Gwalipa, and in gratitude founded a city which he named after the saint. This new city, over the years, the crucible of great rulers and with each one of them the city gained new dimensions. Warrior kings, poets and musicians, making it a city renowned throughout the country.
