Gwalior Fort is one of the major attractions here. The fort is belived to have been establisted about 1,000 years ago by Raja Suraj Sen. The outer wall of the fort extends some 3.2 km in length and is about 35 meters in height. Major improvements were carried out by Raja Man Singh Tomar, of the Tomar dynasty. This fort is one of the most structurally safe forts of India. The massive fort is popularly called "the Gibraltar of India". This fort's architecture is unique. It displays a Chinese influence on Indian architecture, as Chinese dragons have been carved at the base of pillars. This influence could have been due to trade between China and India during the fort's period of construction.
According to history, the original fort of Gwalior was founded by the Bargujar Kings during the 34th/35th century of Kali yuga as per puranas available with them. His palace is the most interesting example of early Hindu work of its class in India. The Mughal emperors, Jahangir and Shah Jahan also added palaces here. The fort area is also home of the Scindia School, a well-regarded institution founded by the late Maratha Maharaja Madhavraoji Shinde of Gwalior in 1897
