Established in the year 1820, St. Joseph’s Cathedral Hyderabad is counted among the most resplendent Roman Catholic churches in India. The initiative to kick start the construction of the current design was taken by Father Antonio Tagliabue in the year 1869. Later on, Father Luigi Malberti took charge and got the beautiful structure completed in 1872. It opened for the public in 1875 on Christmas. Situated in the Gun foundry area of the Pearl City, it reflects the best of Italian architecture.
The open bell tower of the church has five mammoth bells, brought from Italy, are considered sacred and believed to protect the people from hail, thunder and storm. In order to get a wonderful view of the city, one can climb up to the bell tower. About 500 devotees can be accommodated in the central hall of St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
An interesting feature for art lovers is the replica of a masterpiece by the ace sculpture Michelangelo, ‘Pieta’. With so much to imbibe, it stands as a major attraction among Hyderabad explorers.
It can be visited between 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. However, St. Joseph's Cathedral timings differ on Sundays opening at 6:30 a.m. and closing at 9:15 p.m.
