Visit Gangaramaya Temple
Built in19th century, Gangaramaya Temple is the famous Buddhist temple in Colombo. It is located on the Jinaratana Road near Beira Lake. It is a calm place to learn and practice Buddhist teachings.
Inspired by the architectural styles of Thailand, India, Chinese and Sri Lanka, this temple boasts of delicately carved sculptures, paintings, museum and a library. The temple also has a chained elephant named Ganga. The main sanctum (Vihara) with Buddha statue, pagada (Cetiya), the Bodhi tree, the Seema Malaka (the assembly hall) and the antiquity chamber are the highlights of the temple. The Gangaramaya Navam Perahera, the annual parade started in the 1970s to remove the dark days, takes place with great enthusiasm. Entry fee is required for the visitors.
