Visit National Monument
National Monument is an iconic attraction in Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta. It is also called ‘Manos’ by locals. The monument is constructed with Italian marble to the height of 130 metres and has the peak topped with around 50 kg gold.
Though constructed in the times of poverty, this is considered as a symbol of struggle against the Dutch Colonialism. Ride to the top is free so you can get a glimpse of the Merdeka Square and the city beyond. The elevator ride continues every hour so join the queue standing for going up. It is advised to visit on weekends and avoid the hour-long queues. The base of the monument houses a small museum featuring the history of Indonesia.
