Thamel is a tourist-friendly district located in Kathmandu. It has the liveliest streets and been a popular destination for backpackers. Crowded with clothing and souvenir shops, restaurants, pubs and trekking gear shops, it is a very high-spirited place both day and night. Recently Thamel has been declared as ‘traffic free’ zone with the ban on vehicle horns to reduce traffic as well as develop tourism.
For first-timers, mapping down Thamel streets can be stressful. Chaksibari Chowk is one of the longest pedestrian areas and is full of bakeries, clothing stores and souvenir shops while Satghumti is another landmark where you will find eateries and shops selling trekking equipment and packages. Narshing Chowk is the one where the pedestrian area ends. Bajeko Sekuwa, Brezel Cafe, Fire & Ice are popular restaurants to try authentic and western dishes. And for party animals, Purple Haze and Fire Club work best to enjoy the nightlife.
