Visit Madan Mahal Fort

Jabalpur forms an integral part of Madhya Pradesh where numerous historical edifices and natural wonders narrate the city's ever flourishing history and natural serenity. Like several rulers have left their impeccable footprints, the Gond rulers have also sketched their brilliance over Jabalpur. The Madan Mahal Fort towards south western part of the city is an illustration of such Gond brilliance. It was built by Gond ruler Raja Madan Shah in the year 1116 atop rocky hill and amid lush green surrounding.

The Madan Mahal Fort towards south western part of the city is an illustration of such Gond brilliance. It was built by Gond ruler Raja Madan Shah in the year 1116 atop rocky hill and amid lush green surrounding. It served as a watch tower for attackers and defenders during the Gondwana reign. Madan Mahal Fort dominates the skyline of Jabalpur and offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding landscape.

The fort is presently preserved and maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. Many medieval structures in the form of shrines built by Gond King, Sangram Shah, between 1480 and 1540 catch the attention of visitors at the first go.

Few interesting features of the fort are:

  • war rooms,
  • main pleasure chamber of the rulers,
  • small reservoir, and
  • a serene pond inside the premises of the fort.

Madan Mahal Fort may not be aptly termed as a architectural marvel bearing deep connection with Indian history, but is definitely an aura-imposed structure that stands still as a remembrance of the brave Gond dynasty.
