On 14 February 1739 the French took possession of Karaikal town, the fort of Karakalcheri and eight dependent villages and until 1 November 1954, it was under French rule. Today, Karaikal is a major port city of the East Coast under the famous Union Territory of Pondicherry. This place is one of the four major regions of the Union Territory of Pondicherry in India. The enclave is situated around 132 km south of the city of Pondicherry.
