Mahalakshmi Temple is a very old temple in Kolhapur. It is devoted to the Goddess of prosperity Mahalaxmi called as Goddess Amba Bai by the inhabitants of the region. This shrine had been under the aid of all the chief kingdoms who ruled the place and temple is venerated by all the royal family members as well as common people of the region. The temple was built during the rule of King Karandev of Chalukya dynasty in 7th century AD.
The temple is an excellent exemplar of architectural style called ‘Hemandpanthi’ in ancient India. The art and architechture of the holy place is very attractive and showcases the excellence of the people of that era. The walls of the temple complex are decorated with beautiful carvings and numerous sculptures. The temple complex also comprises five towers and a chief hall.
