Kotdwara is situated on the foothills of the Shivaliks at a distance of 101kms from Pauri. It is positioned at an elevation of 395m above sea level. Kotdwara means access to Garhwal. Apart from its religious significance, the town is also popular as the most important commercial center of the region. As per the history of the region, it was ruled over by the Mauryan Empire under the great ruler, Ashoka since years. Later on, the Katyuri Kingdom took over the charge and then the Panwar dynasty of Garhwal.
