Chithirai: Among all the popular festivals, the two week long Chithirai Festival is considered to be one of the biggest celebrations in the city.

Pongal: This festival is celebrated in the month of January is commonly known as the Harvest Festival. The three-day festival is conducted to thank the Sun, the nature and the cattle for providing the farmers a good quality of harvest. Jallikattu is more of a sport than a festival and is conducted mainly in villages. It is a major part of the Pongal celebrations.

There are various other festivals in Madurai that are celebrated with great fun including Festival of the Cradle, Avanimoolam Festival, Float Festival and Dance Festival.
