Visit Malampuzha Dam

With the picturesque Western Ghats at the backdrop, the Malampuzha Dam, located near Palakkad, serves as the largest reservoir in India. It is a combination of an earthen dam and a masonry dam. It stands 125ft high above the Malampuzha River which is a tributary of the Bharathappuzha, Kerala's second-longest river.

The project work on the dam began in the year 1949 and its total catchment are is 145 square km while the capacity of the reservoir is approximately 226 mm³ of water. A network of two canal systems irrigate the farm land and serve the dam's reservoir that provides drinking water to the whole of Palakkad and its surrounding villages.
 

  • The masonry dam is of length of 1,849m while the earthen dam is 220m long.
  • The reservoir of the dam sprawls 42,090hectare.
  • Construction of the dam was completed in the year 1955.
  • A rope-way running parallel to the dam gives a bird' eye view of the Malampuzha Dam and Garden.
  • From Palakkad Railway Station, buses (~Rs.12), auto-rickshaws (~Rs.70 to Rs.120) and taxis (~Rs.250) can be availed to the dam.
  • It is the main attraction in the town around which all other attractions are located.
