Five Rathas, a monumental complex on the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal is a celebrated historical attraction because of its monolithic Indian rock- cut architecture. Located in the Mamallapuram town of Tamil Nadu, Five Rathas has earned the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mamallapuram is regarded as an archaeological wonder of India and Five Rathas form an integral part of it. These cave temples are regarded as Rathas of Mahabharata and are named after Draupadi, Arjuna, Bhima, Dharmaraja, Nakula and Sahadeva.

From rock cut temples to free-standing stone structure, the unique architectural and historical elements of Five Rathas make it a magnificent and much revered temple of south India, apart from a pilgrimage trip, a visit to the attraction can also be planned during a casual holiday.

Those interested in visiting this wonder from ancient India should know that:

  • the nearest airport to it is Chennai,
  • the nearest metro station is Chengalpattu, and
  • it can ve reached by road from Chennai, Kanchipuram, Pondicherry, Madurai and other towns and cities of Tamilnadu.
The complex supposedly remains open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.
