Meerut is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is an ancient town that is located 70 km from Indian capital, Delhi and 453 km from the state capital, Lucknow. It is considered as the second fastest growing city of the state and also has one of the largest Army cantonments in the country. Nestled in the plains between the two major rivers of the country, Ganga and Yamuna, the city boasts of fertile soil that is used to grow crops like wheat, sugarcane and green vegetables.
There are two stories behind the name of the city. First relates to the Maya Rashtra which was the capital of Ravana’s father-in-law. The other reflects that it got its name because the Marathas resided here for some time. It was under the Harappan kingdom in the Vedic age. During a recent archaeological excavation, artifacts of the ancient town of Hastinapur were found that tells about the great history, this town has been a witness to.
