Build with a fusion of influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Indian architecture, having turrets, pointed arches, eccentric ground plan, wood carving, tiles, ornamental iron, brass railings and grills, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways in Mumbai and is the busiest railway station in India.

The history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus dates back to the colonial era and drives you to one of the Eastern shore line of Mumbai, Bori Bandar, which acted as one of the storehouses in Mumbai. On 16 April 1853 the Great Indian Peninsula Railway operated the historic first passenger train in India from Bori Bunder to Thane covering a distance of 34 km. Designed by Frederick William Stevens, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus that was known as the Victoria Terminus, was built in the year 1887 and the original work began in the year 1878. Later in the year 1996, the station was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in the honour of Chhatrapati Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus has been a popular location for many bollywood movies. C.I.D. and Slumdog Millionaire are the noted ones. Nonetheless the Railway Station maintains a museum and several paintings that dilate the colonial era.

Today the Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Station, which is a terminus, maintains 18 platforms, 7 are for locals trains and 11 are for long distance, connecting Mumbai city to rest of the country.
