Anamudi Peak, Munnar
The literal meaning of Anamudi is “Elephants Foreheads” arising from the fact that the peak is home to largest surviving population of Asian elephants, Gaurs and Nilgiri Tahrs. Anamudi is also known as Anai Mudi and has a topographic prominence of 2,479 metres.
The Anamudi peak is famous for trekking expedition in Munnar. The peak is 2,695 metres elevated above the ground. Anamudi is the highest peak in Western Ghats and South India and is situated in Eravikulam National Park. Anamudi Peak is the highest peak outside the Himalayan mountain ranges.
The Anamudi peak is also surrounded with Arundinaria densifolia, Gaultheria fragrantissima and Anaphalis sp.Bamboos, black wood and teak trees are found in abundance in the green forest surrounding the Anamudi Peak. The peak is famous for Neela Kurinji flower which blossoms every twelve years.
Hills, rivers, valley, cultivation of tea, lots of spices, plants, and wildlife etc can be witnessed from the Anamudi Peak. One can also enjoy the sight of beautiful rivers flowing into the east like Vaigai and Thamirabarani and the Periyar river flowing into the Arabian Sea.
