Going by the history, the old land of Gangaridi was spread in between the Rivers Bhagirathi-Hoogly and Padma-Meghna. The modern 24 Parganas was the southern and the south-eastern territory of the legendary kingdom. In the year 1983, an administrative reform committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Ashok Mitra referred to divide the district into two parts. On 1st March, 1986 it was divided into two districts – North and South 24 Parganas.
