Visit Naini Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple, in Nainital, is one of the 51 shaktipeethas in India. Shaktipeethas are places where parts of Goddess Sati's corpse fell while she was being carried by Lord Shiva. It is believed that eyes from the burnt body of Goddess Sati fell at this spot, which is why the Goddess here is worshipped in the form of eyes.

Naina Devi Temple, in Nainital, is one of the 51 shaktipeethas in India. Shaktipeethas are places where parts of Goddess Sati's corpse fell while she was being carried by Lord Shiva. It is believed that eyes from the burnt body of Goddess Sati fell at this spot, which is why the Goddess here is worshipped in the form of eyes. The temple has always been worshipped and held dear by devotees from various parts of the country. Once the temple was destroyed in the landslide of 1880, but was soon re-built in 1883 by the local people of the region.

The temple houses three different deities - Maa Kali on the left, two eyes at the centre and Lord Ganesh to the right. Various fairs and festivals are organised inside the temple complex throughout the year, these include Navratri, Chaitra and several others. Nanda Ashtami is the most important and the biggest festival here which runs for nearly 8 days at a stretch within the temple premises

  • Kathgodam Railway Station is the nearest station to the temple and lies at a distance of 35km approximately.
  • The airport at Pantnagar is about 55km from here.
