Located at a distance of 8 kms from north-west Pondicherry is The Auroville city. The City of Dawn as it is called was conceived as a place for research into ideal of human unity by Mirra Alfassa the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. Auroville came into existence on 28th February 1968. Soil from 124 countries was kept in a lotus-shaped urn and mixed to symbolize universal oneness during its inauguration. Auroville was built initially as a city where people could live with peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, politics and nationalities.
Roger Anger designed Auroville and at present nearly 2000 people reside there with settlements named as Grace, Fraternity, Fertile, Certitude and Transformation. Approximately two-thirds of the people living in the city are non-indians.
The Matrimandir is situated in the centre of the emerging township and covers 62 acres of the city. It is not a temple as such but a place for individual silent concentration. The architecture of Matrimandir can be defined as a 12 sided white marble inner chamber. It has a 70 centimetres optical glass globe in the centre of the marble onto which a shaft of sunlight is focused by way of a roof-mounted heliostat. It is believed to give focal aid when the light falls on the globe.
The building located in Auroville are a combination of modern western and traditional indian architecture. All of which are linked via a narrow road and set in a rural landscape of deep red earth and widespread forest. The residents of Auroville are involved in agriculture, administration, commerce and handicrafts, alternative technology, education and healthcare projects. It is also involved in international award winning development projects like AuroRE Systems which is involved in solar photovoltaic and thermal systems.
Additionally the city has Auroville Visitors Center situated near Bharat Nivas. The center remains open everyday from 0930 Hrs to 1730 Hrs and has an exhibition of permanent history and philosophy of the project. Information Service offering books, brochures and leaflets on various aspects of Auroville are available in the centre. Video depiction on the township and the Matrimandir can be seen at the Auroville Visitors Centre by request. Boutiques, bookshop and cafeteria are among the few amenities available at the center.
