The Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum in Raipur is one of the prime attractions of the capital city of Chhatisgarh. It was established initially in an octagonal British-styled building. But later due to shortage of space, a new building was constructed with donations from Queen Jyoti Devi which has gained prominence as Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum. A huge and interesting library can be enjoyed within its premises as well.

But later due to shortage of space, a new building was constructed with donations from Queen Jyoti Devi which has gained prominence as Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum. A huge and interesting library can be enjoyed within its premises as well.

The museum has two floors and five galleries. Both floors are splashed with objects spanning fields of archaeology, anthropology and natural history. Arts, crafts and paintings can be admired as well. The history of mammals, reptiles and birds can be learnt from the first floor collections.

  • It was established in 1857 and reconstructed in 1953.
  • It is located on Ghadi Chowk, near the D.K. Hospital.
  • The new building was inaugurated by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
  • Queen Jyoti Devi donated one lakh fifty thousand for the construction of the new building and an additional fifty thousand for the library, dedicated to Mahant Sarveshvardas.
  • It is one of the ten oldest museums in India.
