A wonderful district having the highest number of Forts (37 Forts) in the country, Sindhudurg is located in the state of Maharashtra and owns a fortress which acquires an islet in the Arabian Sea. The major Fort of the city is situated on a princely island just off the waterside of Malvan. It is the only fort which houses Shivaji temple within the Fort. The Fort was made by Raja Shivaji in 16th century.
The district was carved out of the erstwhile Ratnagiri District. It is a part of coastal region, a narrow plain on the coast in western state which is situated in between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. The name of the city was named after the Fort of Sindhudurg which means "Fort in the sea". It is considered that the Pandavas passed through the whole Konkan area during the 13th year of exile.
