Sulthan Bathery, a town in the Wayanad district of Kerala witnessed the influence of Jainism from somewhere around 12th century when the Jains started migrating to the region. With the migration of Jain community, the region became the home to a significant number of Jain families. However, as time passed on their numbers reduced substantially and only a few of them belong to the Digambar sect remains.

However, as time passed on their numbers reduced substantially and only a few of them belong to the Digambar sect remains.

The temple is believed to be built during the 13th century with extensive usage of granite. Legends say that the temple first served as a shrine and later became a centre of commercial activity. Certain architectural wonders of the temple like:

  • carved square pillars,
  • stone slab roof ,
  • intricate cornices and
  • exquisite carvings on the pillars
draw the attention of visitors and leave them speechless with bewitched man-made beauty. The carving of Mahavir Jain on a square granite slab in the inner sanctorum is sure to attract the attention of visitors at the first instance. Influenced by the then Vijaynagar style of architecture, the Jain temple at Sultan Bathery occupies a predominant position in the life of Jain devotees.

Beautifully folded by hills from all sides, Sulthan Bathery is embraced by year round pleasant climate and calm soothing environment. The temple can be reached by boarding a train till Kozhikode or flight till Calicut International Airport.
