A small panchayat town in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, Kalugumalai derives its name from the hill called  Kalugumalai, also known as the "Hill of the vulture". Though a town, Kalugumalai turns out to be an attraction in itself because of an ancient rock cut Jain cave temple located over here. Those on a trip to the town will get a chance to spot several rock cut images of Adinatha, Neminatha, Mahaveera, Parvanatha and Bahubali.

Out of various religious shrines, three important temples that draw pilgrims from surrounding regions include:

  • Jain Abode,
  • the Hindu temple, Vettuvan Koil, and
  • Kalugasalamoorthy temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan.
Each of these temples' unique history, architecture and religious attachments contribute to their richness and popularity amongst devotees as well as leisure holiday makers. Our Lady of Lourdes Church, aged more than 100 years, is the biggest Catholic church of the region that witnesses over 3000 members every week who gather for prayers and various social services.

All these holy shrines of different religions come together to turn Kalugumalai into a well preserved pilgrimage destination within the walls of Tuticorin.
