26 August to 6 September 2017
History says that King Mahabali, the ruler of Kerala was very egoistic and haughty and the gods used this personality trait of him to end his life. However, a vardaan (boon) was also given keeping in mind his good deeds that he could visit his loved ones once in an year. It is on the occasion of Onam, the king comes to visit the people of his kingdom and people welcome him wholeheartedly. This cultural festival involves a lot of activities such as snake boat race, playing traditional games and sports, etc. This spectacular race is witnessed by a large number of visitors from around the country too. Mats created with flowers are also made and kept outside the houses to welcome the king. Special graceful dances are also performed by the women that make the festival all the more interesting. This year, Onam will be celebrated on 26 August to 6 September 2017 with the same glee as always and its charm can only be felt by visiting Kerala. Book a flight/train/bus to Kerala soon and watch the grandeur of this event.
