Sonepur Cattle Fair, also known as harihar Kshetra Mela is the biggest cattle fair of Asia that is celebrated on Kartik Poornima. Celebrated in the Sonepur district of Bihar, this fair is held on the confluence of river Ganga and Gandak. There are a large number of animals sold during this fair including dogs, buffaloes, donkeys, ponies, Persian horses, rabbits, goats, camels, elephants, etc. Many varieties of birds and poultry can also be sold or bought during this fair. This annual fair is also known to be the pride of Northern Bihar and has its roots in the history, from the time of ChandraGupt Maurya’s rule. The fair has very high importance in terms of religion and culture and is an important part of the history too.
People from various corners of the world come to buy and sell cattle and also take a dip in the holy rivers to enjoy the fair. This month long festival catches the eyes of its visitors with the elephants who are made to stand in a line for sale. This year, Sonepur Cattle Fair will be organised with the same zeal and enthusiasm from 16th November to 15th December and can be visited by taking a flight/bus/train to Sonepur.
