If you're looking for a quiet getaway in the Nilgiris, you should definitely consider De Rock. Location It is about 20 minutes from Coonoor by car, secluded enough from the bustle and din of tourist traffic, while being accessible enough for any excursions that you might take to nearby tourist spots. It is about an hour's drive to Kotagiri and a bit more to Ooty. Coonoor's famous SIMS park is barely 10 minutes away by car or bike. The property It is not first class. But for the money you spend, you get spacious, quiet and comfortable rooms with clean bathrooms, running hot water 24/7, WiFi, and all the creature comforts one might get at home. Even during peak summer when we went, there was a gentle breeze if you were in the shade. Since the property overlooks a hill slope tea garden, there is a very nice view out of the window. If you like to read or chat outdoors, there is a nice lawn with shaded seating. The host Charles Nathan is a local, and therefore possesses excellent knowledge of the area. We took his suggestions for places to visit and both the drive and the spot turned out to be very relaxing and enjoyable. Charles is passionate about maintaining the Nilgiris pristine environs and is therefore part of environmental groups and spearheads several efforts to keep the region litter-free. If you're into it, you can spend hours talking about the Nilgiris and its many uniquenesses with him. Food The friendly kitchen staff and chef take pains to understand what you like and give you food that is appetising and wholesome. No complaints whatsoever. The staff speak English, Hindi, Tamil and a smattering of Malayalam and Kannada so language is not a barrier either.

Great location, beautiful view, close to Lamb's Rock (tourist attraction), well designed rooms, dining area and kitchen, good food. Staff can be a little more polite towards guests. Eg., one of the guests (from my neighboring room) asked the chef, "hey Chris, good morning, how do you make such nice dosas, my dosa won't come like this"? The chef says with a frown "that's my secret, I cannot reveal it" and walks away. Another example, there was a small confusion with regard to our room type, so I asked the manager "can I meet the owner as I need to clarify the confusion regarding our booking, is he in the office" (simple question, politely asked). Manager replies, "this is not Taj Sir. There is no office geefice, owner will be somewhere around, will come." Other than staff behavior, everything else is awesome.

Excellent place for the stay with good scenic place around. Do not miss this place if you are planning under this budget. Good and clean spacious rooms. Authentic dining place with good and antique piece collections in the dining area. Delicious food prepared by Madesh and joseph, you need to give your order 30 mins before so they serve to you on time. Good complimentary breakfast. Also will mention the taxi service contact him one day before and schedule the plan he will take care of your transport on a reasonable price. Mr.Charles is a gem of person his receiving nature and care to the customer was very very good.

Just one word for this - Amazing n Awesome ...it was my first trip to ooty n ****oor and i must say no regrets as far as stay is concerned. Food, location,ambience, hygiene,service, architecture...all 10 stars. And most importantly the host Mr Charles, I have never seen any one so well behaved n sensible than him specially in his line of business. He made sure that we have the best possible experience in his property and also show us around. Overally a must place to choose if you are planning for a Ooty- Coonoor trip
