Renu Sharma is the founder and host behind NotOnMap's community-led tourism initiatives in Chamba. A passionate advocate of responsible tourism, heritage conservation, and rural livelihoods, she has dedicated her work to creating meaningful travel experiences that directly benefit local communities while preserving the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Himalayas.As the host of NotOnMap H2O House The Watermill Residency, Renu has lovingly revived her family's ancestral property into a unique heritage homestay experience. Nestled above a traditional watermill (Gharat) and surrounded by forests, streams, and village life, H2O House offers guests an authentic glimpse into the living traditions of Chamba. The property itself carries centuries of history, with family ownership tracing back to land grants recorded on an ancient copper plate.Beyond hosting travelers, Renu works closely with local women, youth, artisans, and Self-Help Groups to build sustainable tourism opportunities in the region. Through community kitchens, village experiences, craft initiatives, heritage walks, and homestay development, she has helped create livelihood opportunities for dozens of rural families while encouraging visitors to engage with local culture in a meaningful way.Her vision is simple yet powerful: tourism should not only create memorable experiences for travelers but also strengthen communities, celebrate local traditions, and protect the environment.
