The Legend of the Pandavas' Penance After the colossal Kurukshetra war, the victorious Pandava brothers were consumed by immense guilt for committing Gotra Hatya (killing their own kinsmen, the Kauravas) and Brahmana Hatya (killing teachers and priests like Drona). On the advice of Sage Vyasa, they went to seek Lord Shiva to ask for his forgiveness and cleanse their sins. Shiva's Disguise and the Separation Lord Shiva, deeply annoyed by the widespread bloodshed of the war, was not ready to forgive them easily. To evade the Pandavas, he fled to the Garhwal Himalayas and disguised himself as a divine bull grazing near Guptakashi. The powerful Pandava brother, Bhima, eventually spotted the unique bull and recognized it as Mahadev. As Bhima tried to capture it, the bull began sinking into the earth to escape. Key Fact: Located at an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,800 ft) in Uttarakhand, Rudranath is highly unique because it is the only temple where Lord Shiva's face is exclusively worshipped (known as Neelkanth Mahadev).
