SpiceJet Operation

SpiceJet – History and Operations

Established in the year 1984 by famous industrialist S.K. Modi, SpiceJet was initially offering only private air taxi services to the customers, Later in the year 1993, the company was renamed as MG Express followed by a technical partnership with German airlines Lufthansa. The collaboration between the two companies gave birth to Modiluft and it started providing cargo services until their operations was ceased b the government in the year 1996. An Indian entrepreneur Ajay Singh, acquired the company in the year 2004 who went on to refurbish the original brand name SpiceJet. The first air carrier under the brand name SpiceJet took off on 24th May 2005 from Delhi to Mumbai, after which there was no looking back for SpiceJet as a popular low cost air carrier. In 2012 the company faced financial trouble, due to sky high crude oil prices, which was bailed out by Kalandhi Maran who also acquired 37.7% stake in the company through Sun Group. In the year 2015, Ajay Singh bought the shared sold to Kalanidhi Maran, reinstating his complete ownership of the SpiceJet airlines.

SpiceJet Fleet Size

The company established its headquarters in Gurugram in the year 2005 and established itself a reliable low cost domestic air carrier. Currently, SpiceJet has 111 aircrafts in its fleet that includes Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737-900, Boeing 737 MAX 8 and De Havilland Canada DHC 8-400. There are 10 Boeing 737-700, 51 Boeing 737 -800, 5 Boeing 737-900, 13 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 32 De Havilland Canada DHC 8-400 aircraft. The newly launched Boeing 737 MAX 8 has fuel efficient engines that help in further bringing down the operations cost for the company.

SpiceJet Baggage Allowance Policy

For domestic travel, SpiceJet allows carry-on baggage of up to 7Kgs in the economy class seat, whereas for business class, the carry-on baggage can go up to 10kgs. Passengers can also carry up to 7kgs extra when travelling with infants, however, the dimensions of the extra baggage should not exceed the prescribed limit. The permitted size limit for hand baggage in a Boeing aircraft is 115cm in length, breadth and width. For the Bombardier aircraft, the hand baggage dimensions should not be more than 108cm in length, breadth and width.

The check-in baggage for domestic flights in capped at 15kg per passenger for business class travellers, whereas the limit is 30kg for business class travellers. For international business class travellers, the check-in baggage limit is of 35Kg with the dimensions capped at 158 cm in length, breadth and width.
