About Saudi Arabian Airlines
Saudi Arabian Airlines’ history begins in 14 February, 1945 when the U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gifted a single twin-engine DC-3 (Dakota) HZ-AAX to King Abdul Aziz. The DC-3 was used on routes between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran and carried both passengers as well as cargo. Within a month later, two more DC-3 were purchased by Saudi Arabia.
In the year 1946, Saudi Arabian Airlines was set up as an operating agency of the Ministry of Defense. The first airport and the operating base of the airline was situated at Kandara, which now comes under the downtown area of Jeddah.
Saudi Arabian Airlines has 139 aircrafts which includes the latest and highly advanced wide-bodied jets like B747-400s, B747-100s, B747-300s, B777-200s, MD-11s, Airbus A300-600s and MD90s.
On 29th May 2012, Saudi Arabian Airlines joined SkyTeam global alliance by signing agreements with member airlines. It became the 16th member of SkyTeam alliance and the first member in the Middle East.
The major hub of Saudia airlines are Jeddah-King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), Riyadh-King Khalid International Airport (RUH) and Dammam-King Fahd International Airport (DMM).
